I The annual report of the inspector |of evening continuation schools 'states that 47 schools were in operation/- +the expenditure having been £12,531,, against £11,194 in the previous year. The inspector- says that the poor attendance was due to picture shows,, skating rinks, skittle .alleys, and surf, bathing, and the comparative failure. of ,'£he schools was attributed to thes' pupils arriving tired and weary after their day's work. Compulsion must come as the only / effective -solution. •The inspector urges that the State should forbid 1 the employment of young people for "such hours as to make it impracticable for them to continue, their education.
Mr A. C. - Carmichael (Minister.. of Ediication), commenting on the report, says he intends instituting inquiries in - other countries as to the method s-" adopted. ' ' . ■
