Viscount Hardings visited Cawnpore to investigate .the mosque incident on August' 4, and announced that ■ he would invite the Court's permission to withdraw the ,pro.secutioii, as the ac■^vsed bad already been severely punished.
[Tlie incident referred to occurred when some of .the city's employees were engaged in p,uUing down old buildings for ■street-widening purposes. A few lioards were removed from-a street mosque, and a- Teligious riot ensued, the.workmen lieing severely handled.]
