The ,Secretafy of the .General Post Office 'has -received word from the General Manager of the Union Company that the Sydney manager cabled at noon yesterday that he had received a wireless message from the captaiD • of the Makura, bound from Sydney to Auckland, as follows:—"At 7.10 p.m. found mail room on port, side, near No. 2 hold, on fire. South-east gale ! blowing. Fire .extinguished at 7.30 I p.m. Mails and cargo considerably damaged by fire and water." - The captain added that "He would wiro further particulars.
