THE CITY.

CHRJSTCHURCH DAY BY DAY.

It is reported that some silvered i pennies are in currency in Christchurch S and have been passed off as half-' crowns. Recently the .fraud was de- ( tected in Dunedin in several cases. Yesterday morning Acting-Detective Carney and ■ Constable „ Eichardson raided an alleged gambling school at Ly.ttelton, and summonses in connection therewith will be issued against fifteen men in the courso of a day or two. The fund for the purchase .of the Maori tomb for Canterbury Museum! now stands at £101 17s lid. There can be no question as to the value of the tomb, exhibiting as it does a high .type of Maori carving, and Mr S._ Hurst Seager, a oonnoisseur on Maori art, writes: '' It is unquestionably ex- ( tremely good Maori carving, and quite' the best in tho Museum;," The beetling cliffs at Sumner, along the bottom of which the electric trams rumble day and night for a quarter of a mile before entering the borough proper, were the subject of some discussion by the.Tramway Board yesterday, as the outcome of which it. was decided to join ivith tho Sumner Borough Council in what will b© the first serious effort to remove the danger. During the past three months fully half a dozen cases of th©ft of motor-bicycles have been reported to the Ghristchurch police and owners are warned of the risks they run in leaving their machines in public places. Owing to. the ease with which the various sections of a motorbicvcle can be removed and changed, it is a very difficult matter to trace stolen macliines. '.'-.'. There was an i imposing; array of legal talent at the Christchurch Magistrate 8 Court yesterday. At one time there were no fewer than twenty-four lawyers in attendance,. and they were obliged to sit.three in a seat. The attendance of the public was also much above the average, all th© seating accommodation being occupied. Quite a thrill went through the Court when ten or twelv© smiling young ladies filed in, but beyond a keen interest they were not called upon to take any part in the proceedings. ■■ •. ■ The removal of centre poles in the i city was mentioned by Dr Thacker at the meeting of, the: Tramway Board yesterday. He said that if the Lake Coleridge electric mains were, to b© placed on the 1 tramway poles it would be more difficult to remove th© moat dangerous poles. Tho chairman said that the Board had.decided to remove poles as funds permitted. Dr Thacker thereupon gave notice of motion that the centre poles in High Street from the Bank of New Zealand to the Caversham Corner should be removed at once.
