HAYWARD'S PICTURES.

The new bill submitted for the public's entertainment at His Majesty's Theatre last evening was an interesting series, although there was nothing outstanding about it. The programme was not specially meritorious • in. any one individual department, although sonic very passable pictures were puij on. The house,' considering the cbiinter-'attraction and the rawness' of the :weather, was fairly well attended, , and patrons derived some enjoyment from the performance. The chief of the sets was a drama entitled " Behind the Mask." The story related how a young * spendthrift and adventurer, after being practically engaged to a. beautiful girl, transferred his love to her elder sister, the possessor of a large fortune. The younger girl's koen intuition led her to suspect that her former lover was only anxious to secure her sister's money, and she schemed to open her eyes to the true facts." With this end in view she made inquiries as to his real position, and found, that he was living beyond his means and was seriously in debt. Moreover, he was not a faithful lover, and frequented a dancing hall. Having a natural talent for dancing, she secured an engagement at the hall,'and used a mask to hide her identity, and fascinated her sister's lover: On the night of the lattor's betrothal she again donned her dancing dress and danced before the guests, and caused no little., embarrassment to the unscrupulous lover. She took the mask from her face, and produced ample proof of his deceit, and thus saved her sister from a life of uhhappiness, , The "Australian Gazette," is an ever-wel-come number, and that screened would bear good comparison with any of its forerunners.. In another topical film several views of Auckland and its adjuncts were given. "Monkey Trapping" was a Pathe coloured educational film, and was exceedingly interesting. The other films screened were " Brothers in Arms," a war drama, "Higher Mercy," "Pa's Medicine," "A Mixed. Affair," etc. The programme will be repeated this evening and on Wednesday evening.
