THE WORLD TO-DAY.

"Gxtakdian" Office, November 8, 1912. So long as certain '''douce bodies" persist in looking upon Sunday as the •Sabbath and in erroneously thinking that the strict Jewish law applies to the toodern institution which may be best described as the Lord's Day, so long trill there bo clashing of opinion, with protests, disclaimers, and disputes of an 'kind. The Dunedin Presbytery does not emerge very well from the dust of controversy that it raised the other day over the action of the 'Otago Yacht and Motor Club in taking ihe Canadian Cadets for a trip down the harbour on the Day of Rest. On the merits of the Case, the Presbytery had no ground for complaint, for if it "was "lawful to do good on the Sabbath" .{the old. Jewish Sabbath),; it cannot surely be sinful to take a walk or a sail on the Lord's Day and enjoy the ■■"beauties of sun, earth, and air that the Lord has given. The "unseemly squabble " (as the parties to it confess it is) has now descended into quibbling '©ver the language employed in the 'Presbytery's resolution, arid in a communication sent by the yacht club in treply, along with mutual accusations of saying things that are "false" and "absolutely untrue;" Honours may be said to be "easy" at that sort of *hing; but the yacht club has got in a jieat last word which is worth quoting.. In concluding a lengthy letter to the the wicked yachtsmen have ■the -temerity to write:—"ln ooiiclujHon, the: club desires to say that it regrets this' conflict with the Presbytery, but it cannot allow itself to be unjustly assailed by any body, whether Teligious or otherwise, and it feels that if the Presbytery devoted a little less «f, its attention to the observance of Sunday, and a little more to the observance of accuracy and truth,--, and to the cultivation of the true Christian spirit, it would be "mucli better for Neat, but nasty! But, "then, the children of this world usually have the advantage, in a fight, over the •children of light.
