Although the aspect of the sky last evening, and the weather conditions generally, were far from promising, the morning dawned fine and bright, and in Ashburton, a perfect.day ■foHbwed for the holiday. The town was "extremely quiet and practically the' whole of the business places were closed. The at-: tractions at Christchurch during this ', week have been responsible for a great exodus from Ashburton, and the 7.25 train from Ashburton this morning, and the 9 o'clock special train ■ from Timaru took further batches of Ashburton people to the City. Although Christchurch enticed the greater number of pleasure-seekers, a good many preferred the attractions of their own county and a number of picnic parties left Ashburton this morning for Ashton and Wakanui beaches and the mouth of the river, whilst a few decided to have a quiet time with the rod. The Domain and its sports grounds were but poorly patronised, though a fair number congregated on the bowling green, where a few friendly games were played. One or two of the tennis courts were occupied, and a little cricket'pracItice was also indulged in.
