ANNIVERSARY NOTES.

On March 20 Sir Isaac Newton died i(1727), the Duke of Reichstadt (King of Rome) was born (loii), Ibsen,, the Scandinavian author, was born (1828), and Louis Kossuth, the Hungarian patriot, died (1894). Sir Edward John Poynter, president of the Royal Academy and director of the National Gallery, was born m Paris on March 20, 1883. He exhibited his first picture at the Royal Academy m 1861, and m 1876 was elected a full Academician. On the death of Sir John Millais m 1896 Sir Edward was elected to the presidency of the Royal Academy, and on i;hat occasion he received his knighthood. He was made a baronet m 1902.
