ANNIVERSARY NOTES.

March 1 is a fateful day for Franco. On that day, m 1815, Napoleon escaped from Elba, and m 1871 the Prussians entered Paris. The first number of the London "Spectator" appeared on March 1, 1711; and on March 1, 1899, Dr A. K. H.'Boyd, a celebrated divine, died. A brief sketch may be given of the events that led up to and followed the escape from Elba. In October, 1813, Napoleon was defeated by the allies m a three days' battle near Leipsic, and, finding his power broken, he abdicated. By the Treaty of Paris he was allowed to retire to the Island of Elba with the title of Emperor and a large pension. In February, \lßls, he iamgined that the favourable moment for his escape had arrived, and, embarking his faithful thousand, he set sail for France. After narrowly escaping capture he landed at Cannes on March 1, and his subsequent march to Paris was one triumphal procession. The period between Napoleon's return arid his final overthrow at Waterloo is known m history as the "Hundred Days."
