CHRISTCHUROH, December 5>6. The twenty-sixth annual lawn tennis championships of New Zealand were commenced on Saturday at Lancaster Park in dry, but threatening weather. Recent x%ains had -inado the new courts heavy and dull, and play was on the slow side. There iy-3re no very attractive games in the dra.v, but there was quite enough to interest the spectators. The following are detailed re?;il ts: Men's Singles, Championship, btßt of five sets; advantage sets. First prize, gold medal and trophy value £2 2s and holder of Slazenger Challenge Cup; second prize jbrophy value £1 Is; (Present champion, J. 0. Peacock, Wellington). First round: R. D. Harm an beat A. E, Davey, 6-0, 6-1, 6-3; H. W. Brown beat W. Goss, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 8-6;, Fisher beat Cox, 6-2,6-3,7-5; Bonnington beat H. Butterworth, 7-5, 6-2,: 64J. . Second round: G. Ollivier beat R. Wertheim, 6-1, 6-3, 6-2; R. D. Harman beat F. P. Wilson, 6-3, 6-2, 7 5. Ladies' Singles Championship, best of three sets; advantage sets. Stewart beat Miss Bloxam, 6-0, 6-1; Miss M. Butter worth beat Miss Molesworth, 6-1, 6-3; Miss Cotton beat Miss D. Wcllwood, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Ladies' Doubles Championship, best of three sets; advantage sets. Gold medals and trophies value £2 2s. (Present champions, Miss Eva Travers, Wellington, and Miss R. Wellwood, Hawke's Bay). Misses Stewart and D. Wcllwood beat Misses Mills and Bloxarn, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Men's Doubles Championship, best of three sets; advantage sots. Gold medals and trophy, value £2 2s each. (Present champion, F. M. B. Fisher and J. C Peacock, Wellington). Rice and Heath beat Harman and G. Bnttorworth, 6-0, 6-2, 6-3; Wright and McLoughlin. beat H.
