MILITARY TRAINING.

The following special district-. Older has been issued by Lieutenant-CoJrnc 1 J. T. Burnett Stuart, D.5.0., offkcr commanding the Canterbury - Miluar»District, with regard to military training:— The training of the Territorial Force and the Senior Cadets under the new conditions will commence m the Center bury Military District on January 15, 1912; of drills, showing the times and dates on which the permanent instructors will visit each training centre during the znonth following; that date, will be issued to all concerned a week m advance. JJniforms will shortly be available at regimental headquarters and will be issued to Territorial soldiers under regimental arrangements. Equipment-wi 1! similarly, be issued as it becomes available. '/ .■;,.';■ "' ' :■■.■ • ■ ' As regards the issue of rifles, officers commanding units are held responsible that no rifle is issued to any soldier until the commanding officer or other responsible officer is satisfied that the soldier is capable of taking proper care of his rifle, and thoroughly understands his responsibilities m regard to it. The following is the minimum amount of training that must be performed bttween January 15 and May 31, 1912:— By Territorial Officers and Soldiers.— (a) Twelve drills (indoor or outdoor drills), (b) Four half-day parades or two whole-day parades. (These will only be held under an officer. No half or whole-day parades will be held until every member of the company or similar body for whom the parade is ordered has attended at least six drills), (c) Seven clays' training m camp (exclusive of the days of arrival and departure), (d) The course of musketry laid down for this year (by trained soldiers transferred from*the" Volunteer Force only). By Senior Cadets.—(a) Seventeen drills, (b) Two half-day parades, (c) Musketry for trained Cadets as already ruled. . The attendance of all ranks will be marked up m the notebooks and attendance rolls provided for this purpose. The officer commanding the district hopes that brigade commanders and officers commanding units will exercise personally, as well as through the permanent officers belonging to their staffs; a real supervision over the training of their commands, and will see that all subordinate Territorial officers and noncommissioned officers thoroughly understand their responsibilities m regard to the training and command of those placed under them.
