THE NEW THEATRE.
RECENT COLLAPSE OF WALL
BUILDING BY-LAW NOT COMPLIED WITH.
Since one of the walls of the new theatre, now in course of erection in fancred Street, collapsed, the discovery has been made that, in respect of its dimensions/the building by-laws of the Borough Council have not been complied with. The length of the walls, taking the whole building, is 105 feet, but if the stage and ahte-rooras at the back and the offices in front are deducted, the length is 65 feet. The height of the walls is 29 feet, and, taking into consideration the height and length of the walls, the present thickness of the walls, which is only 14 niches, is -not. in conformity with the by-law. On the plans, and specifications,; as ■ submitted, I'"to' them, the Borough Council issued the building permit, but there is a clause in the bylaws, under which the contractor 'is bound, the permit ■notwithstanding, to comply with the Borough building regulations ,;and, on learning the facts ot the case this morning, the Town olerk notified the 1, contractor that this must be done. The whole matter will probably be considered by the Borough Council at its meeting'to-night
