ELECTION NOTICES. " ' ' " TO THE ELECTORS OF ASHBURTON. I' ADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— AJ ■'■„■■■■ IN TENDERING MY SINCERE THANKS to all those who voted for me at the first poll on Thursday last, which placed me in an honourable position among the candidates for your suffrages, ! notwithstanding the combined forces-I. had to contend against, and, while regretting that lam not in the present fight/\I WOULD RESPECTFULLY ASK FOR ALL LIBERAL VOTERS TO COMBINE IN AN ENDEAVOUR TO WIN THIS SEAT FOR THE GOVERNMENT. No greater political crisis has arisen in New Zealand. The fate of the Liberal Government is hanging in the balance, and the votes that will be recorded on .Thursday, next will decide for the present the position. I WOULD APPEAL ESPECIALLY TO THE WORKERS OF THIS ELECTORATE to consider what the Liberal Government has done for the improvement of their conditions. Although some of the legislation may not be the final solution of this most difficult problem, yet all must admit that the whole has been, in the direction of the betterment and uplifting of the great body of workers. | The legislation of last session shows that the Government is still | working in the same direction in helping those in need. ; To the Government we owe the present condition of our ! Licensing Law, which places New Zealand in the position of having the most advanced legislation on this great 'question of any part o£ the Empire. ; The Land Settlement Laws have been on the lines of steady development and progress, as the thousands settled,- on the land abundantly testify. I would respectfully ask : Why should- the electors ' turn against the Government, at this juncture ? The Opposition do not propose to repeal any of their legislation. Even the Old Age Pension Act is to be taken under; its fostering care, notwithstanding the fact that the. following members of the present Opposition voted to destroy the measure : Messrs Massey , Allen, Herries, Lang, Bollard, Fraser, and Buchanan. •" ; Yet these same gentlemen now ask you to leave the administration in their hands ! Why, I ask, should we '? Is not the future of Liberal legislation safer in the hands of those who j initiated and carried it through in the face of the most determined opposition, than it wotild'^b^ in'lherrands of Massey, Allen ancV Co. ? ' ' I again respectfully ask you to consider t|ie position on broad Liberal lines, and to UNITE YOUR FORCES for THURSDAY NEXT, when victory will be won: Your Obedient Servant, 12 197 W. S. MASLIN.
