ANNIVERSARY NOTES.
It was on August 21, 1779, that Gaptain Cook took possession of New South Wales, hoisting the British flag at Possession Island On this date, in 1808, Wellington defeated the French at the battle of Vimiera; in 1860 the Taku forts were captured by the allied British and French fleets" operating against the Chinese, and in 1868 an attack was made on Ngutu o te Manu by a force under Lieutenant-Colonel McDonnell, Who defeated the Maoris. Among birthdays,'' August 21 is notable as being that of "the Admirable Cnchton," 1561; St. Francis of Sales, 1587; King William IV., 1765; Michelet, the celebrated French historian, 1798, and Prof. Tyndall, 1820.
