STREET LIGHTING.
In speaking at last night's meeting of the Borough Council, Or Nicoll said that about a month ago a letter was read from the Ashburton Gas Company offering to make a reduction m the cost of lighting the street 'lamps, 'm view of the extra two months extension of the lighting season. The offer at the time was not accepted, but wa6 referred to the Lighting Committee, bmco then the committee had met tho Gas Cor-- any -and had discussed the proposal, lie had ascertained that the offer made m tho first instance was a ! reasonable one and left practically no margin of profit for the Gas Company. JJc had taken the trouble- to look up i the cost of lighting the streets m towns similar m ma© to Ashburton, and found tnat ±,d JOs per lamp per annum was most reasonable; m fact, it was a matter for satisfaction tint the ratepayers were able to get the lighting at such a cheap rate. ■ Cr Nicoll moved that the offer of the Gaa Company be accepted, and this wag seconded and carried i
