LONGBEACH SCHOOL.

The annual picnic m connection with this school was held at the mouth of the Ashburton river. The day was beautifully fine, and the children from the Longbeach station, with their parents, were conveyed m vehicles kindly lent by Mr John Grigg, and the journey of seven or eight miles by road was very much enjoyed by the picnickers. The children spent their first hour m strolling about the beach or watching the flowing of the river. At 12 o'clock all , were assembled, and dinner was partaken of. After dinner a number of races and competitions were got off. Games of various kinds were also engaged m until tea-time, when all once more assembled. Tea being over, Mr John McLauchlan (chairman of the School Committee) jiresented the children with prizes, each child attending the school securing a book. Attendance, prizes were awarded to Carrie Watson, James Patterson, Charles Dawson, and Mary Dawson. When the prizes had boen distributed and lollies scrambled for, the- party re-] turned home, having enjoyed a very pleasant outing.—Own cortespr^ent. i
