THE SLEEPING SICKNESS.

Per Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, September 29. A special aniline preparation has been tried m Senegal as a remedy for sleeping sickness, and has proved a success.

[Sleeping sickness first became known m the Congo Basin, and m 1901 spread to Uganda. It is caused the death of about 200,000 out of 300,000 people residing m the infected areas. Colonel Bruce, m 1903, discovered that the disease was due to the presence m the blood of a kind of trypanosonial carried by the tsetse fly. Blacks are peculiarly liable to the disease, but the white man's clothes and sensitive skin very largely protect him. The fly apparently does not retain the power of conveying the infection for more than a few days. In Uganda, vigorous steps have been taken to deal- with tho plague. All infected areas are cleared of their population. The sick or infected patients are sent to special camps m fly-tree areas and treated.]
