SCULLING.
Per Press Association.WANGANUI, June 20. Though the sculling match between Arnst and Webb, an event of worldwide importance, is to take place on Tuesday, public interest is not so keen as might be expected. This is, no doubt, to be accounted for by the fact that the last meeting of these men proved a fiasco. After that race Webb, who is a true sportsman, carried magnanimity to an extent which was foolish by reiterating that he had been beaten on his merits, haying gone to the post m his best form. This was known by a select few to have been anything but the true ponditjon of affairs, but Webb persisted m publicly extolling what was really a fine performance by Arnst. The conseqxience is that to-day many people believe that Webb has no chance of winning. The opposite opinion is held by those who have been associated with the challenger. While acknowledging Arnst's undoubted ability, they say that Webb's real powers are not known by the outside world. He has now got rid of his arm trouble, and if reports are to be believed he recently did a trial which showed that, )f Arnst wins, Tuesday's race will bo a memorable one. Ariist was out to-day, and the manner m which he drove his boat along was amazing.. Barring accidents, a. great race is sure to take place. WANGANUI, June 21. The champion was visited yesterday, and told an interviewer that he was satisfied with his condition, though, he added, he di'S not have quite the same feeling as he had prior to the last race, when he felt fit to pull the sides out of his boat. He also said that he was not rowing with the same freedom, but, nevertheless, he was confident that he could win. Lloyd and Fogwell endorse the champion's opinion with regard to his condition, but express no doubt as to his ability to win. Webb appears to be m the pink of condition, and says he feels quite as well as ever he has fejt, adding that he is sculling as fast, if not faster, than ever.
