AN ASHBURTON MUNICIPAL THEATRE.
To the Editor. Sir, —It was with pleasure I read in Thursday iiight's issue of your paper the article advocating a municipal theatre for the town of. Asnburton.* j There are few, if any, centres in the dominion of such importatice as Ashburton that have not a theatre of some description, and I am entirely of Mr Bullock's opinion, that it is high time the residents of the borough united in their efforts to provide the town with a building which would stand as an emblem of the prosperity of Ashburton. In other centres, such as Oamaru — which, by the way, is also a prohibition centre —I am led to believe that the No-license party rightly called a public meeting to discuss the matter of a municipal theatre for the town, with the result that a committee was formedj which in time arranged a monster bazaar, lasting a week, the net profits of which amounted to about £1000, which was subsidised for £ by £ by the Council; and'by a little hard work they have now one of the most up-to-date theatres to be found in New Zealand. ;''"■'■' I am of the opinion, that if the Aehburton people unite' in the" same wholehearted manner, it would not be long before we are supplied with this longfelt want. I would be pleased if the prime mover in the matter (Mr .Bullock), or his Worship the Mayor, would convene a meeting for the purpose of discussing this matter, as I am sure it would be well attended by many keen supporters of the object in view. Trusting that you will give the matter every reasonable support in ypur columns, I am, yours faithfully, PRO BONO PUBLICO. Ashburton, June 18, 1909.
