RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION IN SCHOOLS.

CHRISTCHURCH, June 16. The North Canterbury Education Board to-day declined to • allow one school day to be shortened by half-an-hour, to admit of that time being devoted to religious teaching. This request for Kalf-an-hour \ifas made by a deputation of clergymen at the Board's last meeting. The Board said that it was quite in Sympathy with clergymen in their desire to see children educated in religion, but declined to shorten the time for the work which the Act intended the children should do in school. The following resolution was carried : —"That this Board expresses its sympathy with those who desire that a religious education should be given to'the children of Canterbury, but does not think it desirable" that the five hours each day now given to other subjects should bo curtailed, especially as those schools and schoolmasters where religious teaching was given would be handicapped in the race with other schools in the subjects of the ordinary syllabus."
