GENERAL LABOURERS' DISPUTE.
A short time ago notices were issued to all the parties' cited for, the original hearing of the Canterbury General Labourers' dispute by the.Conciliation Council, stating that the depute would be heard by the Arbitration Court at the Provincial Council Chambers on July 8. As Harbour Boards, Borough Councils and other bodies which obtained exemption received these notices, they were at a loss to understand why they should be cited for further proceedings. The position was explained to a reporter yesterday by the Clerk of Awards, who said that although the commissioner had struck out the exempted parties* under the terms otjaeetion 38 of the Act, it was required by Section 47, Sub-section 2, that the parties to the proceedings before the Arbitration Court should be the same as those before the Conciliation Council. Mr Justice Sim had decided m the case of the General Labourers' dispute that parties exempted by the Commissioner need not attend, application to this effect having been made and agreed to by the Union. These parties, have now been advised to this effect.
