AShIBURTON STOCK MARKET.

ASHBURTON? YARDS. TUESDAY, JUNE 15. The attendance Vat the weekly stock market held in the Ashburton yards Was only moderate and made up chiefly •of butchers and export buyers. The total yarding was aB follows: 434 fat ewes, 789 fat lambs, 151 fat wethers, 478 store sheep and lambs and 20 head of mixed cattle. V ',■'■ ;- sheep. Fat Pens.—The yarding in the fat sheep and' lamb department included a number of lines of unusually prime sorts, and prices for these were considerably higher than those ruling at any.of the late sales; but the number being so comparatively small, does not furnish any real idea on which to base the tone of the market.':.' Generally, ewes, lambs and wethers of medium to good quality sold on a par with| entries ■at..the past month's sales. In ewes a prime line •of 36 three-quarterbreds made 12s 9d ; in wethers 10 prime crbssbreds made 20s 3d, while a primo lamb •which- obtained the third prize at /the Winter Show sold at 19s. Export buyers operated freely in the purchase of the larger- lines, while local butchers' wants were fully supplied by the smaller lines yarded. Of the total entry of 1365 in the fat department only '275 were passed in. ": \ Store Pens—Of the 478 mixed classes of sheep offered in the store pens, only 52' changed hands. There was no competition, and the market was listless. Aline of 52 six and eight-tooth threeqparterbred ewes "made 13s, while 150 .fair-mouth halfbred ewes were passed in" at 10s 2d, 160 three-quarterbred hoggets (mixed sexes) passed in at 8s ■10s; 27 2-tooth do passed in at 13s 6d, and 89 2 and 4-tooth halfbred wethers passed in at 11s 4<l. . ;V ; CATTLE. '.;,-The 20 head penned, consisted of mixed sorts of. aged and young beasts, chiefly _ of. inferior quality. With the exception of three head, the whole of entries in the fat pens were only in forward condition. , " Competition for medium to prime quality beef was fairly, keen, but the prices obtained do not compare favourably with rates ruling at the last Addington market. Only eight head were offered in the store pens, and'for these bidding was far from being brisk.
