A PRISONER'S ESCAPE.
While the young man named William James Murphy (who appeared at the Ashburton Magistrate's Court yesterday upon several charges of theft, and was remanded to Christchurch, pending the hearing of further charges against him) was being taken to Christchurch by the last express yesterday by two constables, he took advantage of a momentary opportunity to jump off the train. About ten constables were searching for the runaway to-day, but up to the time we went to press, no word had been received m Ashburton as to his recapture.
