THE POULTRY INDUSTRY.
'"The committee of the Society entertained the judges and about fifty exhibitors at supper m the Oddfellows Hall last evening. The Mayor (Mr ±±. Davis) presided, and during the evening a.: toast list was carried out m the usual way. . , During the evening Mr H. D. Hyde Government Poultry Expert, expressed regret that that would be the last oceasicfti on which :he would have the pleasure x)i being.present at the show ny the capacity of a Government Expert, :as under the retrenchment policy: of the.Government he would be shortly) retired.-Mr Hyde then touched on the good.'work that had been carried out by-the" Poultry Department during, the past: ten" years.' For five, years the Department had had to- work under many extreme difficulties," but he could safely "say:.';that they had been able to accomplish more m respecj> to the poultry industry by putting it on a sound and paying basis than had been done during the fifty preceding years. Theyvhad been able to prove beyond doubt that ppultry farming, if carried out on proper-lines, could be made a very reinunefactive business. Though he was retiring from his present position* he did not intend to give up his connection .with the poultry industry, as he intenaed to start on his own account. "Much valuable information was imparted during the -speeches made regarding the breeding of poultry, not oflly- for fancy purposes but "for general "utility, and it was pointed out that "notwithstanding the disparaging remarks that had been made m reference, to the utility classes, the utility bird had" come to etay. .
