ASSAULTING A REPORTER.
Pnr Press Association. OHRISTCHURCH, June 12. For assaulting, yesterday, Stanley East, a reporter on the Times staff, (who, he believed, had written a severe criticism on his objectionable "turn" with the Chung-Ling-Soo Company)), a man named Kalman was to-day 1.-fined £10 and costs. Mr Bishop, S.M., said that the-Press was a free institution, and had every right to protection m the discharge of its duty. The Magistrate added that as Kalman was a first offender, and had evidently lost his temper, he would not be sent to gaol, but the fine must be made exemplary.
