BOXING TOURNAMENT.
The boxing turnament held at the Oddfellows' Hall last evening '.attracted a very large number of those who arc interested m the art of .self-de-fence. Messrs W. J. Moir of "Christchurch and H. H. Sharplin of Staveley acted as judges, and Mr Rube Cooke was referee. Mr J. C. N, Grigg addressed a few words to those assembled, j iii which he dwelt upon the advantages jf amateur over professional boxing. .Mr Oooke, the referee, before announcing tho first bout, expressly desired the spectators to exercise proper control over their feelings, and not to allow their partisanships to interfere, m rany way with the fairness of the contests. They wore not there for foul, cruel or dirty work, but for clean boxing; Those present might say what they.^pleased when tho boxing was over, but they must keep quiet while it was on. The following are the results: Light-weight Championship (open).— First round: W. Page (Ashburton), 10 .stone, beat L. H. Potton (Christchurch). 9st 111 b. m the second round; E. McMinn (Christchurch) 9st 81b, a bye. Final—Page beat McMinn m the fourth, round, winning the cup presented by Mr J. O. N. Grigg. " Light-weight Novice: First round— J. Gundry (Christchurch), J.Ost, beat P. Tipton (Ashburton), 9st 111 b; J. Anderson (Timaru), 9st 121 b, beat W. Johns (Ashburton), 9st 81b; J. Morrisey (Christchurch), lOst, beat L. King (Christchurch), lOst. Second round— Morrisey beat Anderson; Gundry a bye. Final—Morrisey beat Gundry. Feather-weight Novice: T. Sheriffs (Ashburton),-Bst 131 b, beat G. "Judge (Christchurch), Bst 101 b; T. Bennett (Christchurch). Bst 101 b, beat H O'Connor (Ashburton), Bst 111 b. Final—-Ben-nett beat Sheriffs m the second round. "Middle r weight Novice:—L.
