A Press Association telegram from j Wellington states that the master | bakers decided last night that m future i increases or reductions m the price of! | bread shall take place immediately*l similar alterations m the^ price of flour ! are announced, instead of waiting as m the past for consultation. A meeting of the Ashburton NoLicense Council took place last evening. The attendance was unusually large, the Rev. R. J. Liddell presided, and Messrs A. S. Adams and H. D; Bedford, of Dunedin, took part m the proceedings. The Rev. R. J. Liddell and Mr Wm. Harding were elected, delegates to the Christchurch Convention, to bo held next week. By a unanimous vote, the meeting expressed its deesire that any licensing legislation to be introduced during the present Parliament should provide for all issues being decided by a bare majority. Other questions of more or less importance were discussed, and general satisfaction was expressed with the fact that the Selwyn Licensing Committee had declined a license: for a house at Mount Soiners. There's a big drop m prices of drapery and clothing at Mitchell and Turner's Sale. An opportunity like tnis^seU dom occurs, and when it does it isn t wise to let it pass. Remember this sale is not the sweepings of an old stock, but bright new goods are ow^ed throughout each department. , 6 149 Mr Robert Smith, of Masterton,- who is on a visit to his mother, Mrs W. W. Smith, Ashburton,. on the eve of his departure to the Homeland, was entertained by his friends last evening. Some little time ago Mr Smith .invented a new style of lock, which commended itself so highly to a number _of. those interested m the building trade, that he was induced to take out a patent for his invention, which has been protected throughout the manufacturing world at a cost of £275. Two capitalists m Masterton have put £1000 each into the concern, and Mr Smith and one of these leave for England by the Tainui on June 17 to make complete arrangements for the manufacture of the lock. The lock, a model of which was shown to one of our reporters, is made on the circular principle, with a spiral spring, and the key is fitted through the centre of the knob.,lnstead of having to mortice out a large aperture m a door the new lock can be placed m position by simply boring two holes; one for the insertion of the spiral device and lock and the other for the insertion of the knob. This can be fitted m position m lcds than five minutes; and the risk of the spiral spring getting out of repair, m the way i of the flat spring of the common lock, has been reduced to a minimum. At last night's gathering, songs; musical items and recitations were given; light refreshments were handed round; and those present took occasion to wish Mr Smith the fullest success with his patent, a pleasant voyage to the Homeland, and a safe return.
