It will bo remembered An • that, m connection ..Unexpected with the recent labour Variation, dispute which came before the Conciliation Council m Christchurch, Mr •G. AY. Leadley and Mr J. Lambie, representing the Road Boards and the County Council for this county, made an application to the Commissioners for exemption. This application was granted, but according to a statement made to a reporter by Mr Leadley, the award ' which tho Commissioners are recommending applies also to those bodies who were promised exemption. Mr Leadley states that the recommendations wero placed m his hands, a little over a week ago. m Christchurch, and upon discovering their nature he consulted friends, with the result that a formal protest was entered on May 24. It seems that the Commissioners, after both sides had been given to understand that the award would not apply to the local bodies mentioned, made their award without reference to the representatives of either of the parties concerned. Even if County Councils and Road Boards should be included, it is felt that these bodies have had no proper opportunity to stato their ense, for the Commission did not Fit at either Rnngiora or Ashhurton as desired, and owing to the distance theso places are from Christchurch, it was almost, impossible to secure and placo before the Commission all the evidence which might.have been submitted to it on behalf of the local bodies.
