THE HEROES OF AFFLICTION.
„ To the Editor. Sir, —In a series of articles that have appeared m the columns of the Liverpool Weekly Mercury, there is one x on "Heroes Behind Prison Bars," from which I read as follows: "Over twenty years of the grey and grinding life of 1 prison; each day the pattern of every other day; each day stealing something from the fire of the mind until it is but ashes. 'He that has patience,' says Rabelais, 'may compass anything,' and m the patience that sits a fifth of a century within the walls of a prison, there is something of the stuff of heroism." Now, Mr Editor, there are sufferers, m a home m. (this district whose physical infirmity has for years debarred them from knowing what a change of scene means; who, except on certain days, are denied the encouraging, word, or the cheering smile of a friend ;' who for "half a lifetime" have suffered "m mind, body or estate." Mr Editor, are they heroes? CHAS. TURNER, Tuarangi Home, June 3, 1909.
