The magnitude of the frozen meat trade of the Southern Hemisphere is well shown in tho statement that at the end of 1908 there wore 176 steamers engaged in it. Of these 54 trade to South America, 48 to Australia, 45 to Now Zealand, and 29 to both Australasia and South America. Their total cargo capacity is over 12 millions of 561b carcases.; Besides these there .were at that date 14 more .steamers fitted with refrigerating machinery, but not at that time engaged in the trade, and the steamers- litto:] •ip exclusively for carrying chilled hoof from the United States wove also excluded. ,Of tho 48 Australian steamers, only five will hold 100,000 carcases while 19 of the Now Zealand traders will carry from 100,000 to 110,000; Oioven of the South American boat? carry 100,000 to 160,000 (four 150,000 and one 160,000). There are twentymno freezing works in Australia, with a daily freezing capacity of 58,150 sheep and 1780 cattle; twenty-five in -n '"a Zoala"-1- ""'tli a capacity for /0.000 sheep and 170 cattle per day • nna eleven in South America, able "to fioal with 39,800 and 5650 cattle per day. l
