RHODES SCHOLARSHIP.
WELLINGTON, February 26. Tlie selection of a Rhodes, scholar will take place late,this afternoon. The candidates are: A. McDougall, Victoria College; W. G. Aldridge, Auckland ; Bruce, Morrison, Wanganui; P. McCallum, Canterbury; and H. McLeaiy Qtago. All but Mprisoii have received advice by cable of their success in the recent University examinations. Each will have a personal interview with j the committea, which consists of his Excellency the Governor, Sir Robert Stout, Mr Justice Chapman,- and four professors from the metropolitan colleges. WELLINGTON, February 26. Allan McDougall, of Victoria College (Wellington), was to-day selected as the Rhodes scholar from New Zealand for 1909. There were four other candidates^—namely, Alfred G. Aldridge (Auckland University), Bruce Morison (Wanganui Collegiate, School), Peter McCallum (Canterbury College), and Hector McLean (Otago University). His Excellency the Governor presided, and there were also present Sir Robert Stout- (Chief Justice), Mr' Justice Cooper, and Professors; Segar (Auckland University), McKenzio (Victoria College), Chiltou, (Canterbury College), and Gilray (Otago University). Mr McDougall is twenty-threes years of age, and came from Scotland with his parents nine years ago. He attended Wellington Terrace School from 1895 to 1899, and went to Wellington College from 1900 to 1903. At the College he won eleven prizes and three scholarships. He passed to the Victoria College in 1904. In the first year there he won first prizes in English, Latin and French, and repeated these successes in 1905. The following year he graduated as a B.A. in English, Latin, French, mathematics, jurisprudence, and constitutional' history, and won several prizes. Since that time he has b6en in constant employment as a clerk, and has had only his evenings for* University work; yet he secured first-class honours in languages and literature. He obtained his M.A. degree in 1907, and last year won the Jacob Joseph Scholarship.
