"DISCHARGED AND CONVICTED."

To the Editor. Sir,-- V^i'r correspondent " Vcrax " apjiari: .'r- :, ■•!' i! - "';ht colour. He says ;■■ „ .'■■:: i:,aa had no money—that is quite true; but what about other "drunks" who were eoonvicted and discharged, and all had money to pay fines ? I maintain that in a prohibited area, and more especially on a railway station or in a carriage, a " drunk " should be punished severely. Your correspondent would try and make us believe that a man who had done twenty-four or forty-eight hours in gaol would be a. criminal. How ridiculous ! . A man is no more a criminal by going to gaol'than he is by being convicted and discharged, or than he is when he is convicted and pays a fine for being drunk. Imagine what would happen if the " drunks" were convicted and discharged every time they came to Ashburton ! LEST WE FORGET.
