TAIHAPE, February 23. There was quite a sensation at Ohutu last night. It appears that two mon, named Garlick, a labourer, twenty-five years of age, and Chatfield, a married man, rode to Taihape yesterday, returning late m the afternoon. They evidently quarrelled, and got off their boi^ses, Chatfield being thrown over the bank. Had he reached the river death was certain; but fortunately he landed on the verge of a cliff, and was found subsequently m a dazed condition. He tried to induce some of the spectators to go with him, and he would show them where Chatfield was. They declined, and he then asked for Mrs Chatfield. Being told she had gone, he said, " I'll go too." Then the gun went off, and Garlick fell out of the cart, wounded m the left arm, ('host and shoulder.
