TIMARU GRAIN MARKETS.

Grain is now offering in Timaru freely, and though a fair quantity has already changed hands, some merchants are chary of touching it, ' because it has been threshed out of the stook, and they say that after all the wet woMt!i»r experienced it cannot be in a Sir-.- -.-■•["' :oji ;..; handle. Many larin:;- ... ,>. Juried their grain in from the field to store without giving it a possible chance to harden, with the result that some is now being rejected altogether, and for other inferior prices have to bo accepted. On Friday morning one Timaru merchant refused to have anything to do with, four big lines of wheat which were offered him, for no other reason than that it had been stook threshed, and was out of condition. Nearly all the wheat that local merchants are buying is going south, to millers who have small supplies, and it is reported that some lines have been rejected in Dunedin, and thrown back on the hands of the merchants who sent it, and they in turn, will have to fight it out with the farmers from whom they boxight the out of condition wheat. Prices range from 3g 6d to 3s 9d per bushel, according to 4 kind and quality, at country 6tations, v sacks s^d. Velvet wheat is also in demand at the present time, and prime samples are commanding 3s 9d. A good many oats arc also offering now, and sales are baing made at from Is 2^d to Is 3d, on trucks, country stations. It is predicted that the price of this cereal will continue low, as there is a big supply. Potatoes are plentiful, and are now only commanding £3 per ton wholesale, though a little more is obtainable retail.
