FALL IN EXPORTS.
WELLINGTON, February 18. According to returns compiled by the Trade He-view, there was a shortage, of £300,000 m the exports of the dominion for the last quarter of 1908 as compared with the 1 corresponding period of 1907. This is more apparent, than r.Ciil.- In wool alone there is a decreastfof £383,592. The weight of wool shipments, however, shows a shortage of less than 5 per cent., equal m value to barely £57,000, so that to the extent of £326,000 the decrease is only a difference m valuations and quitei misleading, the valuations m December, 1907, having been excessive. Moreover, the December quarter is always an unsatisfacto*- one for purposes of comparison. It is a busy time for exports, and a little lateness or forwardness m operations or m the passing of Custom-house entries may a-ffeet the question whether the exports arc recorded m December or January, a different month and year, and thus a fictitious appearance of increase or decrease may. be created.
