(Received February 20, 10 a.m.) PERTH, February 20. The steamer Paroo has arrived from Singapore, with a case of smallpox aboard. DEPRESSION AT BROKEN HILL. (Received February 20, 9.55 a.m.) SYDNEY, February 2.0. Owing to the protracted arbitration proceedings, workloss minors are feelin" the pinch, and an increase in the strike funds is urged. Business- at the Barrier is at a standstill, and most landlords have received no rent since the trouble began. The South Australia railway receipts have.also greatly decreased, and Adelaide is flooded, with unemployed. EARTHQUAKE RECORDS, (Received February 20, 9.55 a.m.) " SYDNEY, February 20. The seismograph at the Sydney Observatory recorded'the earthquake" in Persia on January 23rd. Between I.3ft and 6.30 in the evening, Ju*ii distinct shocks were recorded. DISCOVERY OF ASBESTOS. A discovery of valuable deposits of wolfram asbestos is reported from the Lithgow district. BROKEN HILL EXPLOSIONS. The Government is offering £200 as a reward for the discovery of the authors of the explosions at Broken Hill during the past six weeks.
