ABOUT CAMPHOR.

It has been said that there are two distinct varieties of the camphor tree grown, one producing the camphor of commerce, and the other only producing camphor oil; but this does not appear to be correct. In a> recent report of Sir A. Hosie, commercial attache to fi.M. Legation at Pekin, it is stated: "Nob only is camnhor distilled from tlie camphor wood chips, but the oil resulting from this distillation is brought to Foochow m airtight old kerosene tins, re-distilled, and made !to yield some 50 per cent of its weight m camphor." The process is described as a very crude one, the oil being poured into the retorts, and the distilled oil, after passing through the worm, is received into kerosene tins, which are placed 'm tanks of water, where they stand for 24 hours to cool, and to deposit the camphor m the bottoms of the tins. The oil is then poured off, and re-distilled as many as sixteen or seventeen times, until all the camphor has been extracted.
