REVISION OF THE VULGATE.

On May 25 the Osservatore Romano published the text of Cardinal Rampolla's letter to Father Hemptinne asking the Benedictine Order to revise the Latin text of the Bible. Cardinal Rampolla adds that the most useful subject for study is that of the variants of the Latin Vulgate which the Fathers of the Council of Trent recognised as the authentic text for public use in the Church, while not denying its imperfections. His Eminence expressed a wish that the Vulgate should be put in a form better corresponding to the original texts, and goes on to say: "Until a favourable moment arrives for such an important revision as will give a satisfactorily amended edition of the Latin Vulgate, a laborious preliminary study of 'preparation is indispensible, through a diligent and complete collation of the variants of the said Vulgate which are ; to be found in the codex writing of the i Fathers, to which study several scholars j have already dedicated themselves with intelligent zeal." The Osservatoro Roman a adds that Father Hemptinne and all the abbots of the order went personally to thank his Eminence for the honour conferred I on them, and expressed the hope that j they would be worthy of the confidence , shown them, ;
