A SUPPOSED TRAGEDY.

STILL A MYSTERY, AUCKLAND, August 12. j The police on duty at Ponsonby station was informed at a quarter past ten iast night by a man named Marshall, that a young couple had fallen from a rock overhanging the water at Shelly Beach. He stated that while near the beach, about ten o'clock, ho heard a splash, followed by a girl's scream :ukl a cry—" Leo, don't Leo! Take me with you!" Then, ho says, he heard a second splash; but, on looking in the direction of the sound, he saw only ripples on the water as if it had been re-; contly been disturbed.* Instead oE going to the spot he ran to the police station, to give the alarm. Two constables, accompanied by Mr. J. H. Upton; were soon on the scene, but alter rowing round about for two hours., tliev found no signs of the tragedy. The police resumed the search this morning.
