DISASTER AND HAIR-BREADTH ESCAPES. .

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 30. The ship McDiarmicl, from Newcastle, bound to South American ports, arrived at Auckland to-day disabled. She encountered a heavy gale soon after leaving Newcastle. The fore topmast carried away at the cap, but apparently the vessel sustained no other damage. AUCKLAND, July 31. An exceptionally boisterous passage was experienced by the ship MacDiarmid. She left Newcastle on July 10, toi' Coquimbo, and in twenty days she sustained damage to the extent of £1000 or £2000. On Monday week last, during a gale of hurricane force, the foretop mast and all the fore sails were carried away. The nu'zzen and main masts 1 wore sprung during the day, a complete S'.Jt of sails were lost, and the cargo shiited, giving the vessel a.considerable list. , . The mate, Mr Borries, was washed overboard, but was washed back again, and the crew were slightly injured in clearing the wreckage. A sudden calm set in next day, and for several days the vessel drifted towards the New Zealand coast until Sunday morning, when another heavy gale was experienced, and lasted till Monday night. . As a tremendous sea was running, tne ship stood out from the land. A considerable number of sails were lost, and the crew moved about the decks kneedeep in water, and hanging to life-lines. A great deal of provisions were lost, and everything moveable on deck and below was carried away, or broken. The vessel is making a little _ water, but it; is feared that she has strained all her standing rigging. , . All the crew received injuries to their hands while clearing the wreckage.
