HAYWOOD ACQUITTED
NEW YORK, July 29. Haywood has been acquitted on the: charge of the murder of Stuenenberg. The jury deliberated for 21 hours. In the first ballot eight supported acquittal and four favoured a verdict involving some degree of murder, but the minority was won over during the night. Haywood, on leaving the dock, thanked each juryman. No demonstration was made. It is understood that the cases against Moyer and Pittibone have beeii abandoned. LONDON, July 29. He adds that Haywood's exoneration implies the exoneration of the entire inner circle of the Western Miners' Federation. The verdict Has J as a complete surprise to the public as i ■to the newspaper correspondents at j Denver, who declares that disagreement ; was the utmost Haywood's friends ex- ; pected. . LONDON, July 29. . The Times' New York correspondent further states that many Labour Unionists will regard the Verdict in Haywood's case as the result of agitation in New York for his acquittal, and adds that the citizens were interrogated at random. Half-a-dozen demonstrators, on being asked as to what tho demonstration was about, not one understood English. These ignorant foreigners throughout.the country will believe that the Labour Unionists have won in a great struggle against their enemies and against the Government, and that the law is arrayed on the side of their enemies.
