THE WAKANUI MILL,

Mr Thoa>fts Rolittfc wrote with reference to the removal of the Wakanui mill and the indemnity required by the Board, asking for information under what by-law the indemnity was required. '"I have been advised." wtote Mr Rollitt, «• that it would bo unwise for me or for the Board to tak^ upon ourselves a liability for which neither myself nor the Board is responsible. With regard to the preheat condition of the road I should be glad if you would allow your overseer and an appointee of mine to make a full reporb on the piesens state of the road, so that there may be no dispute hereafter between us as to any damage done."

The Chairman stated that he had instructed the Clerk to reply in regard to the suggestion that the Board should act jointly with some person Mr Rollitt might appoint to assess damage to roads, that the Board could not divide its responsibility in this saanner, and must be sole arbiter on the subject.

The Chairman's action was approved,

The Secretary of the Committee _ of Management of the Ashburton Technical Classes wrote asking for a contribution from the Board towards the funds of the classes. The question was deferred for consideration. ' ■

Messrs Friedlander Bros, wrote in connection with che stone crusher recently consigned to the Board in execution of its order to Booth, Macdonald and Co., stating that the latter firm had written to them asking when the Board would be prepared to start the machine working, and they would then arrange to send their expert down to attend to starting, and to sac that everything was in working order. The Clerk stated that the machine (in parte) was on truck at the railway station.

The Chairman sud according to the agreement the machine was to be delivered to the Board in full working order. He thought the best thing would be to remind the firm of the terms of theic agreement. The arrival of the machine was also rather belated.

Mr Bruce movod that the Chairman and the Clerk should draft a'letter to the firm on the subject. Mr Doak seconded this, r.n<\ the motion was carried.

The Board was advised that a mooting of the Ashburtoa Road Boards' Association will be held oa January 9, at 1.30 p.m., to consider proposed by-laws relating to the oontrol of traffic of traction engine?.— Received.

A. request from C. S. Alington, Seafield, to destroy gorse by ploughing on Le Breton's Road was granted on the usual conditions.

The Department of Lands and Survey, Christchuroh, wrote advising that the Land Board had sanctioned the transfer of Lease No. V, 573, section 2, Reserve 1497, from Henry Horsnell to Eobert CKb3on, of Chertsey.—Agreed to. An Order-in-Council was re*d declaring the plant known as foxglove (digitalis purpurea) a noxious weed under The Noxious Weeds Act, 1900. —Eeceived.

The Department of Labour drew attention to the requirements of the Shops and Offioes Act, 1904, in regard to the weekly half holiday. The Chairman was appointed a delegate to confer with the delegates from the other local bodies on the subject. overseer's beport. The Overseer stated the various works that had been attended to during the month. la regard to the Wakanui Mill, the, building had now been shifted about half way, and no apparent damage had been done to the roads. The Overseer's report was received and approved. a contractor's troubles. J. Conway, contractor for work on a cutting and embankments at the Ashburton mouth, attended and stated that he was unable to carry out the work to the Overseer's satisfaction. After explanations by the Overseer and the contractor, the whole point of the difficulty seamed to ba that the contractor had left the approaches to the cutting on a curve, while the Overseer desired them straight. The contractor desired that some of the members of the board should go to the catting and view the work. It was decided that the Chairman, Messrs Doak and Allen and the Clerk should visit the work and inspect it with the contractor. CATTLE CfEAZING ON BOADS. The Banger waited on tb,e Board and stated that there were numerous esses of cattle grazing on the road*?, and that he had laid an information in one case.

The Chairman said the Ranger had full control of the whole quostion and the Board would place no difficulties ia his way in the execution of his duties. TENDERS Tenders were offered for grass-seeding on various roads and the following were aocepted:—W. Dalton for cutting on Christie's Road at £3; G,. W. Cochrane for catting on Corbett's Road, bye road off Corbett's Road to T. Wilson's, Leadley's. Road and Chertsey Road £15; and 0. S Alington 10s. FINANCE. Accounts amounting fco, £24,$ 5s 7d were passed for payment. The balance ati the ba.nk was stated to be £386 7s Bd,and the rates outstanding £.§l4 15s 4d. The Board then went into Committee.
