DR R. DUDFIELD, Medical Officer of Health for Paddington, in his last annual report, just issued, commenting on the manufacture of " braudy" so called from ' silent' spirit (spirit made from grain potatoes, etc., by distillation in a patent still), says :•—" Silent spirit is not of a character which commends itself to the medical profession as a harmless drink. Indeed, it usually contains a considerable portion of furfural, which is distinctly poisonous in its action. The intoxication resulting from excessive consumption of spirits adulterated with ' silent' spirit is uiar,V,ed with greater nervous disturbance, and is more injurious ; to the system than thafc due to alcoboj derived from (what may be described as) natural sourceß. For medicinal, purposes there is no comparison between the two spirits. The stimulatingeffects so valuable in shock and exhaustion depend on the ethers and aldehydes. It is therefore, very desirable that brandies ' should be plainly distinguished—the name 'brandy* being reserved for the spirit derived fr#m grapes, and some other trade term assigned to blends of ' silent' and other spirits, fiavoueei $Q, resemble brandy." 10! Intemperance in Germany. SOME striking facts have teeeaMy been brought to light in Berlin bearing on i the pernicious results of indulgence in i alcohol. The medical director of a large ! workmen's hospital, Dr Stadelmann. says' ; that nearly 30 per cent of the unhappy , wretches who fill the large wards in his i hospital are there because of the misuse oif \ drink, and to these another 10 per cen,t may j be added for those whose parents haye been j drinkers. " Were drinking customs abolish- j ed," says Dr. Stadelmann," not one hospital would ba wanted for every three now in ! use, and not one lunatic asylum in ten." With respect to the effect of alcohol on suicides, instructive statistics thow that in 300 suicides which occurred kst year in Germany, in 150 cases the suicide was under the direct influence of drink, and 78 when the victims were recovering from the effects of intoxication. Of the remainder 25 were the children of drinking parents. 10 0
