Riches and Righteousness.—At last night's meeting, Dr. Torr said that, from his observations, this colony was equal to manufacturing beautiful churches but it was sadly lacking in the power to manufacture Christian workers. "It is hard/ he remarked, "to save souls in a church where there is a magnificent pipe organ and a grand choir ; wealthy churches are to be dreaded."

Keir told the Farmers' Union Executive on Saturday that many of their New Zealand made tool 3 were stronger than imported articles. Instancing the case of ploughs, ha declared that the local manufacturers welded their work, but America did not always do so. A Canadian plough ho had seen had no welding at all, and in an American plough he found only one weld. "That/ 1 added Mr Keir, " wa3 a bad one. Concert at Hinds.-—The annual concert in connection with the Hinds school, was held on Friday evening. In spite of the boisterous character of the day, the evening proved sufficiently fine to" enable the function to be carried out, and there was a large attendance. The first part of the programme consisted of ■ songs, recitation?, dialogues, and physical drill by the scholars, and the pleasing way in vhich each item was rendered reflected great credit on the teachers. In the second p!irt of the programme, songs were given by Messrs D. Miller, V. Miiler, J. Brown, and Master Mervyn Miller, Misses Greer, Rennie, Morris ; a recitation was rendered by Mr Frizzelle, and a bagpipe selection by Mr A. Morris. Nearly every item was encored. The accompaniments were played by Miss Jones and Miss Greer. The only thing that tended to mar the proceedings was the action of a few youths, who persisted in making themselves ridiculous to the annoyance of the rest of the audience. Refreshments were handed round st the close. A ball was held after the concert.

An Angler's Experience.—An incident is recorded of the manner in which a devotee of angling the other afternoon received a practical baptism. Crossing a stream in the upper reaches of the Ashburton, the novice, discarding the wariness which should have characterised his movemeats, strode along as it leading a battalion to victory. Nemesis awaited him, and suddenly with a shriek for " help " he disappeared from view, a floating hat and a few bubbles marking the spot where he had descended into the waters encompassing embrace. He bobbed up to the surface quickly with disgruntled look, but it was not until his companion had recovered from an uncontrollable fit of hilarity at the other's misfortune that ho was able to render sufficient assistance to rescue him from his dilemma. While drying in the sun, the angler realised the force of the maxim that " still waters run deep."
