Ashburton Stock Market.

TINWALD YAEDS. Owing no,doubt to the weather conditions prevailing to - day, there was not a large i attendance at the Tinwald yards. The entry comprised some 1100 sheep and 60 j head of catfcle, the former being chiefly made up with crossbred hoggets and breeding ewes. The stor6 cattle entry was made up mostly with young sorts, for which there was only a limited demand, the major portion of the entry being purchased by speculative buyers. Only two fat beasts were yarded in the butchers' pens, and these elicited keen competition. The fat sheep pens were only sparsely filled, the various lines not being prime, prices consequently showed a slight decline on late rates, a remark, however, that could not be applied, had the class of mutton been prime. The sale in the store sheep pens was a little better than of late, which may be attributed to the growth of feed. The following are prices: — Cattle.—Store pens —yearling steers and heifers 20s, 235, 253, 29s to 30s ; dry cows 30s, £2, £2 7s 6d, to £2 10s ; steers £3 to 10s ; cows in calf .£4, £i 10a to £5 ; calves 6s and 7s. Fat pens - 2 steers (heavy weights) £8 17s 6d and £9, respectively.

Sheep—Fat pens—4 and 6 tooth halfbred wethers 21s lOd, 22s 4d, and 22s 8d ; crossbred ewes 20a 3d j merino wethers 11s 3d, 16b, to 16s fid ; crossbred wethers 19s, 19a 3d, 21s 10d ; merino ewes 83. Stove pens—l 37 merino wethers 7a 9d, passed ; 21 crossbred ewes and 16 lambs (all counted) 9s 4d ; 35 crossbred ewes, in lamb, 14s fid, passed ; 35 crossbred ewes and 39 lambs, the latter well-grown, 14s (all counted); 17 crossbred ewes and 17 lambs (all counted) 12s 4d (passed) ; 600 crossbred hofrgets (mixed sexes), a real good even line and well-wooled, 17s Gd (passed); 85 crossbred ewes (4 to 6 tooth) and 8£ lambs (well-grown) 13s 7d; 123 aged'crossbred ewes and 103 lambs (all counted) 9s iOd; 91 merino wethers, in fairly forward condition, 8s 3d (passed).

Motor, Cab Bts-Laws—At last night's meeting of the Christehuroh City Council a lotfcor was road from tha Ashbnrton County Council asking 1 the City Council to appoint a delegate to meet other delegates nt a confe-renco regarding motor car byolaws. Cr Longhnan was appointed, and it was resolved to suggest that the meeting tie held in Cb.riatch.ureh, and that the City Council Chambers be offered for tbo purpope.

Canterbury A. and P. Labourers' Union—Mr B. Kennedy, organiser, addressed a very large meeting of workers in the Mothven School on Saturday night. Mr TV. B. McDonald occupied the chair. The majority of those present being already members, the balance joined or promised to join'the local branch which was formed, and will etart with a membership of about 200. Mr W. B. McDonald was elected chairman of the branch and Mr G. TV. Dore secretary.

Druids—The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Druids' Lodge was fairly well attended last evening, Bro. J. Dobbin, A.D., presiding. A small amount of correspondence dealing with the internal working of the Order 'was read, and sick pay was passed to one member. It was decided to play a return ecchro matoh with the Foresters.

Cash Cycling Club.—The opening run of the Cash Cycling and Athletic Club will bo held on Thursday, when the members will accept the invitation cf the Mayor to visit his residence. Those intending to take part in the rim are requested to attend at the Post Officu at 2.30. p.m. on Thursday. At a, committee meeting of the Club last; evening 27 new members were elected.

Croquet Club. — The annual general

moeUug of the Ashburton Croquet Club was held last night. There was a good attendance of members!. The prizes for lust year's tournament; will be presented on the opening day. The Club expect a very good season, the Christchurch and Timaru Clubs being anxious to try results with the Ashburton croquet players.

His Excellency the Governor desires that the attention of the public should be specially called to the fact that the tendf-rs recently invited for the supply of 500 horses for the South African Constabulary must be sent to tbe Governor for transmission by telegraph to the High Commissioner of South Africa.
