Euchre Match.—The amalgamated euchre match railway station hands and Fire Brigade took place last evening, and resulted in a win for the Fire Brigade, by 39 games to 2(i. At the after social gathering Captain Barbur was in the chair. Songs were, rendered by Messrs Dolman, Hitlgrove, Warren, MuDoagMli, Mulford, Burns, Johnston, McKay, Clark, W. Huston G. Doxey, and Poison. The usual toasts were duly honoured. Cantcirbort Land Board—Among other matiers brought before the Canterbury Hoard at Thursday's sitting by Messrs Friedlander Bros, Ltd., was a question as to whether a transfer of a section at Highbank held by the late Mr W. Ledgerwood would be approved in favour of his widow. The Board concluded that it had no legal power to sanction such a proposal in this case. Cattle Movements.—-Mr A. J. Keith, of Oamaru, passed through Ashburton today with 400 store 2 and 3 year old cattle, mostly bullocks, en route for the West Coast. Youi-ro People's Society -The usual weekly meeting of the Ashburton Baptist Society was held last evening. There was a good attendance, Miss Tucker presiding. The subject under discussion was Missions —South America, a Negleoted.Continent— which was "much appreciated by those present. Social—St Stephen's choir and Sunday School teachers held their annual social in the schoolroom last evening, when there was a large gathering. Musical items were given by the choir boys in a body, and solos were contributed by Messrs White, MoPherson, Stock and Olaridge and by Master Collard tttock. -Mrs Claridge accompanied. During au interval the Vicar presented the attendance prizes which the choir boys had gained, each recipient being warmly applauded. Mr Whitehouse took the opportunity of speaking to ohoristers and teachers en the> great importance and responsibility of their work, tie urged the teachers at St Stephen's to try to persuade their children to take an interest in the beautiful grounds of their church, at least so far as to sea that no wilful damage was done. Thanks were also given to Mrs Stock who had charge of the refreshments and to all who had assisted. Southern Cross Club's Social.—The members of the Hakatere Club were the guests of the Southern Cross Club last evening. A euchre tournament first engaged attention, and resulted in a draw —42 games each. Ab the after gathering Mr Geo. Culverhouse was in the chair. The chief toast of theevenine, " The Hakatere Club," was proposed by Mr R. Hodgson, who made special reference to the success achieved by the Hakatere Club this season; and to Mr A. Brown's inclusion in the Canterbury rep. taem. The toaßt was responded to by Messrs W. Thomas and W, Childs. During the evening songs were sung by Messrs Yeel, Rudkin, and others; whistling solo by ,Mr R. Stock* step dance by Mr M. Fitzgerald and banjo bolo by Mr P. Sullivan, the latter item being highly appreciated. Mr Creagh bas definitely decided not to contest the Oamaru seat. The contest is now between the Hon. T. Y. Duncan and Mr Mitchell (Independent). At the Tinwald yards on Tuesday next* the National Mortgage and Agency Co., (in conjunction with Messrs Friedlander 8r03., Ltd) will sell 2000 forward hoggets. A concert will beheld in the Flemington Sohool on Friday evening next.
