Hockey.—A good deal of interest was taken yesterday in the hockey match Sydenham v Ashhutton played in the Domain. Both visiting and local teams were well matched and had several of the home teams players exercised more judgment and played with more energy the visitors would have undoubtedly suffered defeat. During the match the play was considerably hampered by appeals to the referee from either side, but that gentleman, generally speaking, gave impartial decisions. The game resulted in a win for the visitors by 3 goals to two. The visitors were entertained at luncheon at the Commercial Hotel, and left for Geraldiue by the afte moon train.

Dromobb Literary Society.—There was an attendance of between 30 and 40 at the weekly meeting of Dromore Literary Society on Wednesday evening, Mr W. Eissane being voted to the chair. First on the programme was a spelling competition, which was won by Miss Smith, Messrs R. Campbell and F. Hanrahan tying for second place. Then followed the mock Parliamentary election, Messrs W. J. Elliott and Jas. Allen having been nominated as Liberal and Conservative candidates respectively. Both had given considerable time and care to the preparation of their speeches as was evidenced by the good exposition they gave of the politics of the day as viewed from the standpoints of their respective parties, Their efforts were thoroughly appreciated for both candidates were loudly applauded, and after numerous questions, humorous and otherwise, had been answered to the evident satisfaction of the meeting, a ballot was taken resulting in a tie, in which satisfactory position the candidates decided to leave it. Votes of thanks to the speakar and the chairman terminated a most successful meeting.

The Southern Cross ' Dispute.—Speak" ing at the dinner in connection with the foot rail match Banks and Professions v. Auctioneers, Mr P. H, Cox in proposing the toast of " The Winning Team," referred at some length to the dispute that had arisen between the Southern Cross Football Club and the Rugby Union. He was aware that the dispute had arisen out of a small matter and had unfortunately ended more seriously. Having heard a good deal of comment on the question, he felt sure he was voicing the sentiments of a large nnmber of footballers when he urged an amicable and speedy settlement of the point in dispute, lie wonld suggest that the hatohet be buried, and that a match be played between the Southern Cross and Old Boys to wind up the season. Such a game would be much appreciated, as both clubs were popular with the public.
