Match Against Thornton's Eleven.
Received Sept. 8, 9.6 a.m. London, Sept 7 The match. Australia v C. I. Thornton's Eleven began at Scarborough to-day. The weather wa9 stormy, and the wicket difficult. Newland, Gregory, Noble, and Gehrs are not playing. Jackson won the toss, and went in. The first wicket was down at 24, Spooner giving Trumper an easy chance ia the alipa. MacLaren was dismissed by a soft catch at poinfr. 2 for 47. Denton was the" next to go, skying one which fell into Kelly's hands. 3 for 59. The fourth wicket fell at 81. Hirst drove one back to Layer. 5 for 86. Bosanquet followed Hirst's example. Both ohances were nicely taken by Layer. 6 for 116. Four runs were added, and then Layer removed Rhodes's middle stump, Following are the scores:
