Anghilno—Mr H. G. Berryman caught three fine trout at the mouth of the Ash* burton last evening, the heaviest weighing 91bs. The river is reported to be m fairly good fishing order. Alleged Slt Grog Case.—lt is understood that the charge against Samuel Alex* ander for alleged sly grogging will be heard on Friday next. A Eare Animal.—While driving down the Wakanui road opposite Mr E. Chalmers' farm on Tuesday last Mr George Wilson, of Seaview, discovered a full grown hedgehog, which had the appearance of having been run over by a vehicle. The animal was quite warm.proving that it had only been recently killed. Wo were not aware that hedgehogs were m existence m this country, and where this particular one came from and who liberated it is a mystery. Mr Wilson intends to preserve the skin as a curiosity. ; Pbesentation.—A large gathering of the Dorcas Society took place at Mrs E. Friedlander's on Monday, when a presentation was made to Miss Violet Purnell on the occasion of her approaching marriage. Mrs B. Friedlander (president) made a speech, m which she said how much they regretted Miss Purnell's departure, and how greatly they appreciated her past work. Misa Purnell, although greatly overcome, suitably replied. The presentation took the form of a handsome silver teapot and half a dozen silver teaspoons. After the presentation the [[assemblage retired to the dining room, when refreshments were dispensed. Presbyterian Sunday School Picnic.— Over two hundred scholars attending the Ashburton and Allenton Presbyterian Sunday Schools, toaether with a number of parents, assembled on the Show Grounds yesterday and celebrated their annual picnic. The weather was all that could be desired and a most enjoyable programme was provided the ohildren,Viy way of games and racing for toys. An abundant supply of refreshments, which had been provided by the parents, was handed round. Messrs McClurg and Doyle kindly drove a number of the scholars to the grounds m their motor cars, while several vehicles wer» also requisitioned for this purpose. Much credit is due to the teachers for the arduous way m which they worked to provide enjoyment for the scholars.
