Reduction in Fire Insurance Rates.— Mr F. Ferriman, agent for the North British Insurance Company, has received from the head office instructions to accept risks on dwellings at 33a per cent less than tariff rates, and 10 per cent less on all other risks. A good area of the oat crops while only a few inches in height are coming out in ear. Taking the crops as a whole, he thinks the prospects of the Southland farmers are far from being encouraging. The Black Family—The Black Family appeared again at the Oddfellows' Hall last evening, when an entirely fresh programme was presonted. It is sufficient to say that the performance was fully up to the standard of the previous night. The audience, though not a large one, was very appreciative. The family left for the south to-day. Violet Gladioli.—We were shown today a floral curiosity in the shape of a couple of gladiolus blooms, of a deep violet colour. The ordinary colour of gladioli is a vivid scarlet, and although other colours have been produced, violot or blue gladioli have not heretofore been seen in Ashburton. McKay 4£min, Accident —Mr John Rule, jun., met with an accident yesterday afternoon, while attempting to extinguish a fire in a haystack on Mr H. A. Lloyd's property, near the saleyards. Passing by, Mr Eule noticed the fire, and he proceeded to render assistance in putting the flames out. v Haying failed to extinguish the fire by water, Mr Rule attempted to cut a portion of the stack away with a hay knife, and in doing so he dipped, and in trying to break his tall, he caught hold of the knife, and sustained a deep gash in the palm of his hand. . Junior National Scholarships.—At the meeting of the Board of Education in Christchurch yesterday, the chairman reported that the four junior national scholarships for the North Canterbury districtbad been' allocated to Colin A. Hendry (Ashburton), 583 marks; W. O. R. Gilling (Little River), 520 marks; Roy C. Par Lie (Little Akaloa), 467 marks; aud J. M. O'Connor (Richmond), 542 marks. * He stated that the Board's funds would allow it,to allocate two additional junior scholarships to the candidates who had come next on the list in its examinations. The chairman wa3 authorised to allocate the two additional scholarships. Presei<wation. —A presentation ceremony was performed last evening in Messrs Geiseler and Glenie's rooms, the guest of the evening being Mr R. R. Johnston;, Mr Geoffry Portar occupied the chair, and there were some thirty others present. In his opening remarks, the chairman explained that when the friends of Mr Johnston heard that he intended to leave Ashburton to take over" the Livery Stable Business conducted in Timaru by Mr F. Claridge, it was decided to make him a presentation and tender him a suitable send-off. On behalf of tho subscribers he had much pleasure in presenting Mr Johnston with a purse of sovereigns and a medal suitably inscribed as a token of regard, other friends present also spbko of Mr Johnston aud the guest of the .evening suitably responded. Addington Stock Market.—At the Addington stock market yesterday, the following sales were made on account of local farmers:—Fafc sheep —Mr T. Dent, Lauviston, 35 ewes at 18s to 2ls 9J ; executors, D. G, Holmef?, Rakaia, 3-i crossbred ewes at I 17s 3d. School Accommodation. —At the Board of Education meeting in Christchurch yesterday ifc was reported that the Building Committee had agreed that the removal of the Lyndhurst School to the vicinity of the railway station could not be recommended, and that the proposal to have the Marawiti children conveyed to Lauriston should be given effect to. Firing at the Express.—Tw6 of the occupants of a carriage on the first express from Chiistchurch on Tuesday had a startling experience. The express had just left Orari and was-getting up top speed when what was concluded to be a bullet from a pea-rifle crashed through a closed window on Ihe west side of a carriage and (what was further concluded) went out at an open window on the east side. The . west window was pierced about the centre by a whole in which one cou'd put his little finger, and starrod in many directions. Almost opposite each window a man was sitting reading, and to say that the men were startled is to put the matter mildly. The train was travelling so fast that the eight occupants of the carriage failed to notice anyone near the line.
